Clean hair and a healthy scalp are equivalent to having healthy skin, strong muscles, teeth and bones. What you put on your hair is just as important as what you put into your body. Do you know what is in your hair products? Can you even pronounce the words? Let's take a look at some key ingredients.Isopropyl Alcohol is a very common ingredient. It can be found in almost all hair and skin care products. Plain and simple, this ingredient will dry out your hair and create breakage.Mineral Oil & Petrolatum is a derivative of crude oil (petroleum). This ingredient coats the hair and prevents it from breathing.PEG (Polyethylene Glycol), is an ingredient that strips the natural oils from the hair. PEG breaks down oils. It is also used in household and industrial cleansers.PG (Propylene Glycol) is a solvent used in most personal care products. It has the ability to penetrate the skin quickly. This ingredient can also be found in antifreeze and is utilized in food processing. It is toxic.SLS (Sodium Lauryl Sulfate) is a key ingredient in most shampoos and conditioners. This ingredient creates foam. It is a cheap ingredient that is widely used in the personal care industry. SLS can be very toxic. It can also be found in car wash soaps, garage floor cleaners and engine degreasers.SLES (Sodium Laureth Sulfate) is the alcohol form of SLS. Both have a drying effect. Both are considered potentially carcinogenic.DEA (Diethanolamine), MEA (Momoethanolamine), TEA (Triethanolamine) are also commonly found in products that foam. Cocamide and Lauramide are specific names found on labels. These are hormone disrupting chemicals, and have been linked to liver and kidney cancer.FD & C Color Pigments add color. In some cases these are made from coal tar, and in most cases are carcinogenic.Fragrance is in most personal care products. Most are toxic and carcinogenic.Imidazolidinyl Urea and DMDM Hydantoin are preservatives that release formaldehyde. Formaldehyde can irritate the respiratory system. Most products found in stores contain formaldehyde releasing ingredients.
